The department works to provide superior clinical care to dermatology patients; to train and educate clinical scholars, including residents, medical students, and on-going continuing medical education; to conduct research to promote greater understanding of the field of dermatology; and to promote academic excellence in all of the department’s endeavors whether they are clinical, educational, research, or administrative.

Dr. Aimee Smidt Award

Aimee C. Smidt, M.D., Named Chief of Staff

Congratulations to Aimee C. Smidt, M.D., FAAD, FAAP, who was recently elected Chief of Staff at UNMH and Chair of the UNMH Medical Executive Committee. Dr. Smidt is a board certified child and adolescent dermatologist who has been on faculty at UNM since 2009.

Dr. Smidt is an Assistant Professor in the departments of Dermatology and Pediatrics and the Medical Director for Dermatology. In this capacity, she works to improve the quality of patient care and the resident/rotator/medical student learning experience. In addition, she works with UNMH clinic personnel and holds monthly practice excellence meetings to support and encourage clinic operational efficiency.

 Dr. Smidt is also Founding Director of the UNMH Vascular Lesions Clinic. This clinic holds sessions quarterly, seeing an average of 8-10 patients each session. The multidisciplinary clinic garners consistent participation from an expanding number of services including: Pediatric Dermatology, Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Radiology, Pediatric Otolaryngology, Interventional Radiology, Neurosurgery, Genetics, Plastic Surgery, Child Psychiatry, Pediatric Orthopedics and Oculoplastic Surgery. It is the only such clinic in the state of New Mexico.

In 2012, Dr. Smidt was chosen to participate in the first class of the UNM Medical Leadership Academy and in 2013 was nominated for a stellar consultant award. Dr. Smidt also serves as physician officer for the UNMH Laser Committee, and is a member of the Physician Advisory   documentation improvement in the Dermatology Clinic. She is the UNM SOM  AOA councilor (2014-2017) and a mentor to many training students, residents and alumni/ae.
